Running Costs & Energy Efficiency

Is Air Conditioning Expensive to Run?

One of the most common concerns about air conditioning is electricity consumption.

One of the most common concerns about air conditioning is electricity consumption.

The answer depends on the system, how it is used and whether it is heating or cooling your space.

Understanding Electricity Consumption

An air conditioning unit's rated heating or cooling capacity is not the same as its electrical power consumption.

For example, a system delivering 3 kW of heating does not necessarily consume 3 kW of electricity.

Heat pump efficiency is commonly described using COP and seasonal performance measures.

How Can You Estimate Running Costs?

A simple calculation is: Electrical power consumption in kW × hours of operation × electricity price per kWh.

For example, if a unit averages 0.7 kW of electrical consumption over four hours and electricity costs 25p per kWh, the illustrative electricity cost would be:

0.7 × 4 × £0.25 = £0.70.

This is only an example, not a prediction for any particular installation. Actual consumption changes as the system adjusts its output and operating conditions vary.

What Makes Running Costs Higher?

Poor insulation, draughts, extreme outdoor temperatures, oversized temperature settings, long operating periods and unsuitable equipment can all increase consumption.

How Can You Improve Efficiency?

Choose sensible thermostat settings.

Keep doors and windows closed when appropriate.

Maintain filters according to the manufacturer's guidance.

Ensure the system is correctly sized and professionally installed.

Consider improving the insulation and shading of the room.

Heating Versus Cooling

Heating and cooling performance vary with external conditions and demand.

For heating, a reversible air-to-air heat pump may use less electricity than direct electric resistance heating to deliver the same useful heat under suitable conditions.

That does not automatically mean it is cheaper than every gas or other heating system.

Find Out What Suits Your Property

The best way to understand likely running costs is to consider the specific room, proposed equipment, operating pattern and energy tariff.

Frequently asked questions

Does air conditioning use a lot of electricity?

It depends on the unit's capacity and efficiency, how hard it's working and for how long. A correctly sized, well-maintained system in an insulated room uses far less than a struggling one.

Will it lower my bills?

It may, if it replaces less efficient electric heating, but we won't promise savings without understanding your property, usage and tariff.
