The problem

Too hot in summer? Too cold in winter?

Lightweight construction and big glazed doors make garden rooms wonderful to look at — and difficult to keep comfortable. They can bake in July sun and feel chilly by October.

A garden room should be comfortable in every season.

The solution

Heating and cooling from one system

Modern reversible split air conditioning works as an air-to-air heat pump. A discreet indoor unit and a compact outdoor unit can cool and dehumidify in summer, then provide efficient heating in winter.

Performance depends on the room's insulation, correct sizing, installation quality and external conditions — which is why we assess every building first.

Benefits

Why garden room owners choose a split system

Year-round comfort

Work, create or relax in your garden room whatever the season.

Heating and cooling in one system

A single reversible unit cools in summer and heats in winter.

Precise temperature control

Set exactly the temperature you want, with timers to have the room ready.

No conventional central heating needed

Suitable for many spaces where running wet heating pipes isn't practical.

Suitable spaces

Where it can work well

Many garden buildings are suitable — though not every outbuilding is. We'll assess yours before recommending anything.

  • Garden offices
  • Studios
  • Summerhouses
  • Hobby rooms
  • Converted garages
  • Insulated outbuildings
Limitations: uninsulated sheds, very thin-walled summerhouses, buildings without a suitable electrical supply, or sites where an outdoor unit can't be positioned sensibly may not be suitable without other work first.

How installation works

Five clear steps

  1. 01

    Consultation

We talk about how you use the room and when it's uncomfortable.

  2. 02

    Assessment

We check insulation, glazing, construction and the electrical supply — and tell you honestly if the building isn't suitable yet.

  3. 03

    Equipment selection

We recommend a correctly sized system for the room's volume and heat gains.

  4. 04

    Outdoor unit positioning

We agree a sensible location, considering access, drainage, noise, neighbours and boundaries.

  5. 05

    Professional installation

Neat installation, testing and a full handover so you know how to get the best from it.

FAQs

Garden room questions

How much will it cost to run?

It depends on the building's insulation, the room size, the system's efficiency, how many hours you use it and your electricity tariff. We can explain the factors for your space, but we won't promise specific figures without assessing it.

Is it noisy?

Indoor units are designed to be quiet, ideal for calls and concentration. Outdoor units make some noise when running, so we position them carefully — particularly near neighbours. Manufacturers publish sound levels for each model.

Does my garden room need to be insulated?

For good results, yes. In a poorly insulated building much of the heating or cooling is lost. We'll assess the walls, roof, floor and glazing and be honest about what's achievable.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

Usually on a wall bracket or ground stand close to the building. We'll discuss space, appearance, drainage, access for servicing and distance from boundaries.

What electrical supply is needed?

The garden room needs a suitable supply with enough capacity for the system. Some buildings need electrical work first — all work must meet the relevant regulations, and we'll flag anything required.

Do I need planning permission?

Many domestic installations fall under permitted development in England, but conditions apply — including unit size, position, proximity to boundaries, listed buildings and conservation areas. Permission isn't always unnecessary, so check with your local planning authority if in doubt.
