When most people think of air conditioning, they picture a cool room on a hot summer's day. But modern air conditioning systems can do much more than keep you cool.
Many systems installed in UK homes are actually reversible air-to-air heat pumps. This means they can provide both heating and cooling from the same unit.
How Does Air Conditioning Provide Heating?
Rather than creating heat in the same way as a traditional electric resistance heater, an air-to-air heat pump transfers heat from the outside air into your home.
Even when outdoor temperatures are low, there is heat energy available in the air. A correctly specified system can extract this energy and use it to warm your room.
When summer arrives, the system reverses the process to remove heat from indoors and provide cooling.
Is It Efficient?
Air-to-air heat pumps can deliver several units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed under suitable operating conditions. Their actual efficiency depends on outdoor temperature, system specification, installation quality and how the equipment is used.
That can make them an attractive alternative to direct electric heating in certain rooms.
However, running costs depend on your electricity tariff, heat demand, insulation and the heating system you are comparing against. Savings are not guaranteed.

Which Rooms Are Suitable?
Air conditioning can be particularly useful in bedrooms, living rooms, conservatories, home offices and garden rooms.
A single indoor unit generally heats or cools the space it serves. Larger homes may need multiple units or a different system design.
Can It Replace Central Heating?
In some properties, air-to-air heating can be the main source of space heating. In others, it works best alongside an existing heating system.
One important difference is that most standard air-to-air systems do not provide domestic hot water, so a separate solution is usually needed.
Is Air Conditioning Worth Considering?
If you want more control over indoor temperatures throughout the year, a heating-and-cooling air conditioning system could be worth exploring.

Frequently asked questions
Will it work when it's freezing outside?
Many modern units are designed to keep heating at sub-zero outdoor temperatures, though output and efficiency fall as it gets colder. Check the manufacturer's rated operating range for the specific model.
Can it replace my central heating?
For individual rooms it can be the main heat source. Replacing a whole-house system is a bigger decision that depends on the property, and we'll give honest advice after a survey.
